Police now have a suspect in custody in a stabbing incident that happened Thursday night on the west side of Bemidji. In a press release, the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office says that 71-year-old Mert Scripture answered a knock at his door in Grant Township at about 9:20 pm. A man identified as Orland James Spears, 23, of Redby asked to make a phone call. Service allowed Spears to make the call outside of the home, and after he hung up, Spears broke through the front door and stabbed Service twice in the chest then fled the scene on foot.
Police conducted a man hunt in the neighborhood overnight which was unsuccessful, but police began getting phone calls just after 5 o'clock this morning of a person walking around near homes in the area. They eventually caught Spears in the garage of a home, and according to the press release he was taken down by a police dog after refusing to lower his knife. Mr. Service remains hospitalized at this time and there is no word yet on his condition.
